The Art of Badasserie
Disclaimer: I apologize in advance for using the word badass. I realize that it might offend some people and may not seem very lady-like. Like it or not, the word is now a mostly accepted part of our vocabulary, even listed in traditional on-line dictionaries. If you find yourself offended, please focus on the message rather than on the word itself.
The term Badass can have a bad rep, but what makes it so relevant today and powerful in its own sense? I set out to define what it means to me. I think it’s a fun word, that encapsulates a lot of emotional power.
There are 5 guiding principles to the art of badasserie. Adopting the first 4 can make you a badass, but the 5th element is really what makes it an art form.
1. Values
In coaching, we talk about living and leading on purpose. Discovering our values which are to guide us like a compass.
A real badass is driven by values such as responsibility, justice, honor, courage, compassion, humility, integrity, and selflessness, among others.
2. Boundaries and “radical candor”
A badass knows their limits, what they will and won’t accept, what they can and cannot do. They will communicate those boundaries unapologetically. Not only that, but they will apply the 2 principles of Kim Scott’s ‘radical candor’. They will care for the other person, and challenge them directly, giving them feedback in the moment, because they want to see that person grow.
3. Authenticity
A real badass does not fake it. A real badass knows who they are and what they stand for. They are genuine and transparent. This gives them an internal strength, self-confidence.
A badass stays true to themselves, always. This means being themselves for themselves, and not being fake to impress others.
4. Contribution and selflessness
A badass is not a jerk, a bully wearing a leather jacket, or by the old definition of the word “a tough, uncompromising, or intimidating person”. They do not go looking for fights either, they realize that there are some fights not worth fighting.
A real badass is a servant leader. She does things for others, is selfless, and looks to develop and raise the people around her.
5. Humility and the art of badasserie
Humility is the cornerstone of badasserie. A self-proclaimed badass would be anything but.
Furthermore, art is defined in the dictionary as producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Standing in your own badasserie is beauty and power.
My first language is French, and as I typically speak a mix of French and English, or franglais, adding the ending ‘sserie’ to such an unconventional and controversial word added to its softening, giving it a little class. Patisserie, rotisserie, brasserie, badasserie…
I partner with leaders to transform their mindsets and behaviors so that they lead and live wholeheartedly and powerfully. Contact me if you’d like to step into your own badasserie.
